Start with text size
Small text is the most common reason people find their phone tiring to use. Fortunately, it is also the easiest thing to fix. On an iPhone, open Settings, tap Display & Brightness, then Text Size, and drag the slider to the right. On most Android phones, open Settings, tap Display, then Font size.
If you would like everything on the screen to be larger — not just the words — look for a setting called Display Zoom on iPhone or Display size on Android.
Make the screen easier on your eyes
A screen that is too dim can cause eye strain, and one that is too bright can be uncomfortable in the evening. Most phones can adjust brightness automatically based on the room you are in.
- Turn on automatic brightness so the screen adapts to your surroundings.
- Try Bold Text for words that are easier to read at a glance.
- Use Night Shift (iPhone) or Eye comfort (Android) for warmer colors in the evening.
- Increase contrast if buttons and backgrounds blend together.
Hear calls more clearly
If voices on calls sound quiet or muffled, press the volume buttons on the side of the phone during a call — the call volume is separate from the ringer volume. Many phones also include hearing settings that boost certain sounds, and most work with modern hearing aids.
Reduce interruptions
Constant notifications can make a phone feel overwhelming. Open Settings, tap Notifications, and turn off alerts for apps you do not need to hear from right away. A Do Not Disturb or Focus schedule can silence your phone overnight while still letting calls from favorite contacts ring through.
